What Are Silhouettes?

Whilst browsing antique shops you may have come across 18th Century black paper profiles of people presented in miniature cameos.

What you may not have realised is that these wonderfully dramatic pieces of art are called ‘Silhouettes’ and where cut freehand (without drawing first) with scissors . At the time this spectacular art form was the best way to capture a likeness of a person until it was replaced by photography.
